Rettward von Doernberg Releases “Up ’n’ Down” — A Funk-Soul Groove Years in the Making

Berlin, December 12, 2025 — Composer and producer Rettward von Doernberg unveils his new single “Up ’n’ Down,” a lively funk-soul track that combines infectious grooves with a story that runs deeper than the music initially suggests. The song radiates positive energy and movement, yet behind its upbeat surface lies the portrait of someone carrying a far more complicated life.

For von Doernberg, the origins of the track stretch back many years. Long before the song took shape, a small musical idea kept resurfacing in unexpected moments. He would suddenly find himself singing the melody or beat-boxing the rhythm without really planning to.

“I had this groove in my head for a very long time,” von Doernberg says. “It would just appear out of nowhere and I’d start singing it or tapping the beat. At some point I thought: if an idea keeps returning like that, maybe it’s trying to tell you something.”

A New Milestone in AI Collaboration

When he eventually decided to turn the fragment into a finished song, von Doernberg once again collaborated with artificial intelligence as part of his creative process. What surprised him most was not only how close the results came to the sound he had imagined, but also how much musical expression he was able to draw from the system.

“I was genuinely amazed,” he explains. “For the first time, the AI really helped me reach the exact vibe I had been hearing in my head for years. And the vocals had real feeling to it. For me, that was another step forward in what this technology can do.”

A Groove With a Hidden Story

The finished track moves effortlessly between pop, funk, and soul influences. Driven by energetic drums, a warm electric bass, and expressive guitar lines, “Up ’n’ Down” feels light, groovy, and instantly memorable.

At the same time, the lyrics hint at something more reflective. The character in the song appears to be going through a difficult phase in life, yet chooses to embrace the moment — dancing, letting go, and escaping the weight of everyday struggles for a few hours.

“Sometimes we just need that,” says von Doernberg. “Maybe life is complicated or painful, but for one night you just want to dance and forget everything else.”

An Artist in a Productive Phase

The release comes during an unusually productive creative period for the composer. In the past 15 months, Rettward von Doernberg has been releasing a new piece of music every week on his music website, exploring different styles and musical ideas.

His compositions have been used for many years across a variety of media, including radio, television, films, and video games. They have also been performed by ensembles of different sizes, giving von Doernberg opportunities to gain early experience conducting his own music.

Von Doernberg studied at the Musicians Institute in Hollywood and at the University of California, Los Angeles. During his time there, he also had the opportunity to learn from renowned film composers and Academy Award winners such as James Newton Howard, Alan Silvestri, and Hans Zimmer — influences that continue to shape his musical approach today.
